Respect is the OG WOC Feminist Anthem. Aretha described Respect as -"a woman's anthem, a battle cry, a mantra... it was the need of the nation. Everyone wanted respect." I don't remember the first time I heard "Respect"- a song so deeply embedded in our culture, we can take it for granted as it fades into the background of commercials and rom-coms...but I believe, for me and many of us- Aretha's "Respect" was my first and earliest understanding of feminism in art- & possibly an introduction to feminsim in general. She's "asking for" it- but her powerful delivery tells us- SHE DEMANDS IT! Otis Redding did not sing the famous "R.E.S.P.E.C.T." part in his version- but Aretha said, I thought I should spell it out.
