Solita Pero Feliz Pt 2: More WOC Single Girl & Self Adoration Anthems

February 9, 2019

Welcome to Solita Pero Feliz Pt 2: an inter-generational exploration of women's empowerment through popular music

exclusively featuring women of color artists!

This is the second installment of songs of self adoration, sexual liberation, strong female love and friendship over relationships with losers, and walking away from those relationships when they no longer serve you.... belt these bangers alone in your car (remember tho- if you're not black- don't say it!), demand R.E.S.P.E.C.T., get to feeling yourself, bask in your own glory and demand everyone

"LOOK at ME!" Know what you want and what you're worth,

be a bad bitch, be a boss bitch, getting that MONEY, and  look as fine as JLo in her iconic lace up boots walking away when that no good, do nothing fuckboy creeps back into your gorgeous head. oh, and again- for your listening pleasure- ZERO Taylor Swift.

RESPECT- Aretha Franklin

This installment of "Solita Pero Feliz" is dedicated to the Queen of Soul: Aretha Franklin.

Respect is the OG WOC Feminist Anthem. Aretha described Respect as -"a woman's anthem, a battle cry, a mantra... it was the need of the nation. Everyone wanted respect." I don't remember the first time I heard "Respect"- a song so deeply embedded in our culture, we can take it for granted as it fades into the background of commercials and rom-coms...but I believe, for me and many of us- Aretha's "Respect" was my first and earliest understanding of feminism in art- & possibly an introduction to feminsim in general. She's "asking for" it- but her powerful delivery tells us- SHE DEMANDS IT! Otis Redding did not sing the famous "R.E.S.P.E.C.T." part in his version- but Aretha said, I thought I should spell it out.
